To document this project, over 40 friends and family members, many of whom knew my mom,
generously agreed to model one or more scarves for the camera.
Each model was then asked to write a short statement about why they picked
that word and what it meant to them. The photo session itself became a celebration of Mom.
Full of laughter, tears and fond memories, everyone who participated made it their own personal experience.

We are who we are –
the product of our experences, the good and the difficult. We need to accept ourselves, always, AS IS. ~ Helen F. |
I chose AS IS...
Because I love my family AS IS. Because I love life AS IS. Because God loves us AS IS. ~ Lory H. |
BE to me means being present in the now. BE true to yourself!
BE who you want to BE!! ~ Jodi A. |
I chose BE because I instantly thought of the saying “BE true to yourself” which is something I try to remember every day. BE yourself. BE honest. BE open... Just BE.
~ Ashley M. |
The word CALM provides an outlook toward life that I encourage as a yoga teacher, and that I attempt to practice every day. It helps me to channel my energy in a positive way... with “CALM determination”.
~ Ilene F. |
We chose the word CALM because in a house full of men, we must remain CALM.
~ Lory H. & Ashley M. |
I like the word CARE because it has so many meanings that are important to being a good person, especially a good-hearted person. It can mean empathy, sensitivity, heartfelt, effort, kindness. Caring about someone shows passion and sweetness.
~ Julie K. |

was focused and interested and caring. She lived her life with CARE. ~ Ruth W. |

~ Geraldine S. |
EVER, always, a very
powerful word... ~ Pat K. |
We are cousins, forEVER connected through our Moms.

FEEL – the most important word. Without the ability to FEEL we cannot be fully human.
~ Helen F. |
Today I FEEL content and happy with my life!!
~ Pam B. |
I don’t want to GROW up? I want to always see the world fresh each day as my dear friend Betty or “Mother Goose” always seemed to do. She had a twinkle in her eye, a smile on her face, always up for something new and fun! Like Tinkerbell, she was ageless, keeping that quality is the lesson she left me... Never GROW up!
~ Melinda B. |
I am entering the “empty nest” phase of my life very soon and I still don’t know what I want to be when I GROW up! I am trying not to think too much and just try new things –
“Carpe Diem” is my new motto. ~ Teresa K. |
I love to watch my own children GROW and I am lucky enough in my line of work to participate in other families’ growth as well.
~ Carly W. |
It’s with HELP that we become the people we desire to be. HELP is the building block of every person’s mind,
body and soul. ~ Sarah A. |
I love HELPing people.
~ Estelle P. |
INCH jumped right out at me for two reasons –
One, being only 60 inches tall doesn’t mean I don’t pack a punch! Small is mighty! Two, slow and steady wins the race! We move through life – the good and the not-so-good – INCH by INCH. ~ Cristin B. |
Betty was all about humor; what would life be without JESTing?
~ Joie D. |
Jill is another four letter word for KIND! To experience kindness, to have kindness. To be KIND often one has to go through extreme sorrow and that’s all you know is kindness. Cultivate kindness, practice kindness... even when it’s difficult.
~ Gai R. |
LOVE, it means family. We didn’t meet too often but we blended together and from the beginning we were family.
~ Beatrice W. |
I LOVE my mom and she
LOVEs me! ~ Ruth W. & Carly W. |
This project was all about LOVE. The boundless LOVE that my mom had for me, and I for her, continues to live on in my heart and soul. I miss you and LOVE you every minute of every day.
~ Jill W. |
The word LOVE is multidimensional; and I believe and have lived my life from a place of LOVE. I was fortunate to have been raised with LOVE, and am able to offer it back to my family, friends, my students, and people that come
into my life. ~ Ilene F. |
I chose MEND because it seemed to me to be “British”. It reminded me of Betty in so many ways. She seemed to always want “all fences MENDed”. It’s a very special word that reminds me of Betty.
~ Brenda W. |
Each day we can MEND a heart with something as simple as
a smile. Even such a singular gesture can have unexpected implications. ~ Janet K. |
I was going through a very rough time in my life. When I met Betty, I had just
started to MEND. ~ Debbie A. |
I have spent the last four years on the MEND since my husband Irl died. Life changed drastically for me and my son. We both are on the MEND putting our new lives together. It is an ongoing process.

I chose OPEN because I recently moved to Ohio from Ontario, married my best friend and man of my dreams, and started a new job at Sun News. I am OPEN to life, love, fun, failing, hard times, the present and the future. Today I felt so OPENED UP after hearing Jill’s story about her relationship with her mom and scarf project. Life is so unpredictable, I’m OPEN to what will come.

PUSH is the word I need to remember in order to try my hardest and be the best
person I can be. ~ Elizabeth G. |
Sometimes, in one’s life, one has to PUSH to get through a challenge. Betty Weiskopf knew how to quietly, gently PUSH herself through life’s challenges with grace and dignity. What a wonderful role model.

~ Samantha S. |
I like words that start with “qu” – they are good triple score Scrabble words.
(See – I always have a QUIP.) ~ Heidi C. |
REST has a different meaning for me now than it did a dozen years ago when my children were babies, Now REST signifies a goal: the ability to put stress and chaos in a compartment and not have it spill into my day-to-day life. REST is a deep and satisfying peace that sustains – not for just a moment or a day, but is as much a part of my life as sleeping or breathing.
~ Susan C. |
‘Cause that’s the state I’m in!
~ Honey L. |
I chose this word TRUE, since
I think you should always be TRUE to yourself. Be who you are and don’t change for anyone. ~ Tiffany S. |
In this world of entitlement and instant gratification, I think it is sometimes good to control our URGEs – but only sometimes.
~ Bobbie J. |
We chose this word together because we value having each other to VENT when we need
a person to listen to our uncensored thoughts and feelings without judgement. We are sisters and have always been close — “You see everything, you see every part. You see all my light and you love my dark. (Alanis Morissette) ~ Theresa K. & Bobbie J. |
I have become the woman and mother that I am today because I have had the WILL to make it through the rough times and come out a better person because of it.
~ Mandy W. |
WILL helps give you the drive to get through a difficult situation. One of the most important times that WILL helped me was through all the paperwork to adopt my children. What a wonderful thing!
~ Corey S. |
I chose this word because I think it represents my personality: hugs and kisses.
